About APS Check

A free, independent tool for South African matric learners to calculate their APS and find courses they qualify for.

Why this exists

Every year thousands of South African learners apply blindly to universities and TVET colleges — sometimes finding out only after applying that they didn't qualify, missed an application window, or didn't meet a specific subject minimum.

APS Check pulls course requirements from 76 institutions into one place, calculates your APS instantly, and shows you exactly which courses you qualify for. No accounts required to calculate. Sign up only when you want to save your shortlist.

What you can do

Important disclaimers

  • Not affiliated. APS Check is an independent project and not affiliated with any university, university of technology, or TVET college listed on this site. Institution names and trademarks belong to their respective owners.
  • Verify before applying. Course details, APS requirements, subject minimums, application open and close dates, and fees are sourced from publicly available institution publications. They can change without notice. Always confirm details with the institution before applying.
  • "Standard APS" only. The calculator uses the standard 7-point NSC scale and excludes Life Orientation from the top 6. Some institutions (e.g. UCT, Wits) use slightly different formulas — those are not currently calculated.
  • Your data is private. APS calculations and course shortlists you save are stored in your private account. Row-level security in our database ensures no other user can read your saved data. We do not sell or share personal information.
  • POPIA. If you are under 18, please use APS Check with your parent or guardian's permission. We collect consent at signup. Any data deletion request can be made via the suggestion form below.

Spot a wrong APS? Course missing? Idea for a feature? Drop a note — every submission is read.

Where the data comes from

Course catalogues, faculty lists, and APS requirements are gathered from each institution's public admissions pages and prospectus documents. We do our best to keep this current, but edge-case requirements (medicine, NBT thresholds, conditional offers) are intentionally simplified for clarity.

If you spot something wrong or out of date, please use the suggestion form above. Tell us the institution, the course name, and what you think is correct — we'll fix it.
