1. Who we are

APS Check is operated by Three Lines Techno, a sole proprietorship based in South Africa. References to "we", "us", or "our" in this policy mean Three Lines Techno.

This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use APS Check, in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 ("POPIA").

The Information Officer for the purposes of POPIA is Thabang Sehoole, contactable at info@threelinestechno.co.za.

2. What information we collect

We only collect information you provide or that is necessary to operate the service:

  • Account information — your email address and the name you choose to provide when signing up.
  • APS calculations you save — the subject marks you enter and the resulting APS score, only if you choose to save them to your account.
  • Saved courses — the courses you shortlist on your dashboard.
  • Suggestions and feedback — anything you submit through the suggestion box on our About page.
  • Technical data — basic information about your visit (IP address, browser, page views) collected by our hosting provider, Vercel, for security and performance purposes.

You can use the calculator without an account. We only retain data you choose to save by signing up and clicking "Save".

3. Why we collect it

We collect personal information for the following purposes:

  • To create and manage your account.
  • To save your APS results and shortlisted courses for you.
  • To communicate with you about your account (e.g. email confirmation, password reset).
  • To respond to feedback and improve the service.
  • To detect and prevent abuse, fraud, or security threats.

Our lawful basis for processing your information under POPIA is your consent (when you sign up and use the service) and our legitimate interest in operating, securing, and improving the platform.

4. Special note for users under 18

Many users of APS Check are matric learners and may be under the age of 18. Under South African law, a child cannot legally provide valid consent on their own.

If you are under 18, you must obtain your parent or legal guardian's permission before creating an account. Our signup form includes a parental consent checkbox; ticking that box is your confirmation that you have this permission.

A parent or guardian who believes their child has signed up without their consent may contact us at info@threelinestechno.co.za to have the account and associated data deleted.

5. How we keep your information safe

We take the protection of your information seriously and use a combination of technical and organisational measures:

  • All connections to APS Check are encrypted with HTTPS/TLS.
  • Passwords are stored using strong cryptographic hashing through Supabase Auth — we never see or store your plain-text password.
  • Database access is governed by Row-Level Security policies that ensure each user can only read or modify their own data. Other users cannot see your APS results, saved courses, or marks.
  • Access to back-end systems is limited to the Information Officer and protected by multi-factor authentication where available.

No system is perfectly secure. If we ever become aware of a breach affecting your data, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as required by POPIA.

6. Who we share your information with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the following service providers, who are necessary to operate APS Check:

Each of these providers is contractually required to protect your information and may not use it for any purpose other than providing their service to us.

We may also disclose information if required by law, a court order, or other lawful authority.

7. Cross-border transfers

Some of our service providers process information outside South Africa. We rely on POPIA section 72 to make these transfers, which permits cross-border transfer of personal information where the recipient is subject to a law or contract that provides comparable protection.

8. Cookies

APS Check uses cookies for essential functions — primarily to keep you signed in to your account. We do not currently use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.

You can clear cookies in your browser at any time. Doing so will sign you out of your account.

9. Your rights

Under POPIA, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct or update inaccurate information.
  • Request deletion of your personal information.
  • Object to processing of your personal information.
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator if you believe your rights have been infringed: inforegulator.org.za.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@threelinestechno.co.za. We will respond within a reasonable period and at most within 30 days.

You can also delete your saved data yourself by removing entries from your dashboard, or by deleting your account through the dashboard or by contacting us.

10. How long we keep your data

We keep your account information and saved data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will permanently delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or accounting purposes.

Suggestion-box submissions are retained indefinitely as they help us improve the platform. If you would like a submission you made deleted, contact us.

11. Updates to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change. If the changes are material, we will notify registered users by email.
